Gavin Ralston Logan was the Master of the SS Baron Ailsa which was torpedoed and sunk on the date given. He and a fireman were the only crew members to lose their lives.

Four of Mary's six children died in infancy whereas both Mary and her husband, James Howatt both lived to very ripe ages of 71 and 86 respectively.
Mary died on Nov 19th 1881.

James Howatt Ancestry Tour
This evening I am presenting an image of a grave-marker from Glasgow's Southern Necropolis.
For those interested in social history this is a sad record of high infant mortality which was prevalent in Glasgow in the mid 1800s with this family losing four of their six children to an early death.
The memorial records the death of James Howatt on June 22nd 1896, age 86. His occupation is stated as a Measurer. This may be an occupation in the textile industry but I think a more likely modern day equivalent is that of a building or land surveyor (construction industry).

This afternoon I am posting the image of a grave-marker recording the passing of Isabella Tait, wife of Benjamin Conner. The memorial was erected by James Russell who was the husband of Janet Tait, presumably Isabella's sister. Isabella died May 7th 1846 age 25, perhaps in childbirth?

Glasgow Southern Necropolis Tour
This afternoon I am presenting an overview of Glasgow's Southern Necropolis. This is a 'closed' cemetery located close to Glasgow's Gorbals area and is home to remains of about 250,000 people.
This is an absolutely fascinating site to visit.It holds the graves and headstones of of leading merchants, traders, shipbuilders and architects all of whom contributed to generating the wealth which positioned Glasgow as the 'second city of the British empire'. There is much to interest the ancestry researcher and people interested in social history such as the high incidence of infant mortality which was a feature of the 19th century.
Entrance to the Necropolis is through an impressive, castellated Norman-style gatehouse built by Charles Wilson in 1848, currently in a poor state of repair.

This afternoon I am presenting an image of a memorial at Glasgow's Southern Necropolis. I find this absolutely fascinating. It was erected by Jeanne Moore in memory of her father, Francis Moore who fought with the Grenadier Guards at the Battle of Waterloo on June 18th 1815.
Francis died in Glasgow on June 4 1875 age 88yrs from which it follows he was borne in 1787 and would have been age 28 at the Battle of Waterloo.

John Gow Ancestry Tour

This evening I am presenting some images of Kinloch Kirk, Perthshire. Here there is a major memorial to John Gow who died Jan 15th 1876 age 29 at Butterstone. The name Gow is quite common in this area, in particular the famous Neil Gow, an 18th century Scots fiddle composer.To this day there is a John R Gow Ltd in Dundee.

Govan Carved Stones Tour

This morning I am presenting some images of one of Scotland's most iconic sites.
Govan (near Glasgow) has a remarkable heritage of thirty one early Christian carved stones which date from the 9th-11th centuries. They range from a sarcophagus and recumbant cross-slabs to free-standing crosses and cross-slabs together with a group of five hogback monuments. The stones indicate influences from Pictland to the north and Cumbria to the south. The present church dates from the 19th century but it sits on the site of an early Christian church dedicated to St. Constantine which may have been founded by the late 9th century.
The Govan Old Parish Church is effectively a museum housing the famous stones and is well worth a visit.

Cawdor Castle Tour

This evening I am presenting some images of Cawdor Castle, which is located near Inverness. The castle has a tenuous connection with Shakespeare's Macbeth (Thane of Cawdor).
This is a classic medieval castle with tower and drawbridge. It is open to the public where visitors can view the sitting room, dungeon, freshwater well and kitchens. Contents include paintings, tapestries, furniture and books.
The gardens are of great interest also, both formal and riverside.There is also a maze.

The Glasgow Necropolis is considered one the most significant cemeteries in Europe. It is located conveniently close to Glasgow Cathedral and easily accessible. Commanding views of Glasgow are available from the summit.
The Necropolis has been described as a 'unique representation of Victorian Glasgow, built when Glasgow was second city of the (British) empire. It exudes the confidence, wealth and security of that era.
The site is populated by memorials to the merchant patriachs of the City and contains the remains of leading Glaswegians. The memorials are designed by such notable architects as Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, Bryce, Hamilton and Mackintosh.
The masonry work is of a very high standard.
This first image is actually of the Southern Necropolis near the Gorbals. Like its northern sibling it contains the memorials to the Great and the Good.It is strange place, partly vandalised but kept in a neat condition.

This is the Major Archibald Douglas Monteath Mausoleum which is based on the Knights Templar Church of the Holy Sepulchre,
Another general view with the Dunn of Duntocher Monument to the immediate right.
A view with the John Henry Alexander Monument in the centre left.This gentleman died as the result of an incident in a Glasgow theatre and the memorial reflects his thespian background and demise. The front section is an elaborate proscenium stage, with footlights, and the figures of tragedy and comedy complete with a laurel wreath all representing Alexander's final curtain call.
Both Northern and Southern Necropolis appeal to a wide range of interests including photography, history, architecture, masonry and social history. Allow about 1 hour for each visit.

Finlaggan Tour

This evening I am presenting a couple of images of Finlaggan. This was the home of the MacDonald chiefs for almost 400 years, from the 12th to the 16th centuries. From this location, the Lords of the Isles ruled the Atlantic seaboard from Kintyre to Lewis..
Finlaggan is situated a few miles to the south-west of Port Askaig on the island of Islay.
Here is an image looking north towards the Isle of Jura with some friendly bovines looking on.
This is the actual site at Finlaggan-to the right of the picture.In the foreground is a prehistoric standing, stone.
Apart from Finlaggan, Islay is famous for its whisky distilleries and is well worth a visit.

Acharn Tour
Acharn is small village on the edge of Loch Tay near Kenmore. It is a great little spot for a short but energetic hike. Firstly, you walk uphill to the Falls of Acharn, which are quite spectacular and are approached through a very spooky 'Hermit's Cave'. Then you walk on up to a prehistoric stone circle high up on the hills and which affords magnificent views of Loch Tay below.
